The earliest remains at the site are signs of digging, visible in the eastern moat, attributed to the First Temple period. Also found in the moat were the remains of a thick stone wall identified as one from the eighth century BCE. This may possibly be the continuation of the Broad Wall uncovered in the Jewish Quarter.
A massive wall, termed the First Wall by Josephus (see Tour 3), was built here during the Hasmonean period (second century BCE). This wall successfully withstood the siege mounted by the Seleucid king Antiochus VII Sidetes (132 BCE). Round ballista stones used by his troops to bombard the Hasmonean city were discovered next to the wall.
